First 9 dart Check Out

by

When was the first 9-dart finish? Well it was John Lowe in 1984 in a TELEVISED British tournament. Did you notice the word televised, that’s the point, this was the first recorded on film or video so everyone can see it with their own eyes. John admits he had done it before in his autobiography (which I would recommend by the way) but this was the first time there was irrefutable proof of it happening. I’ll bet someone has it on youtube by now. Yep they have, see video below

Lots of other claims just won’t wash, even if it happened, we just have their word for it, so John’s the man, the first one to do it so everyone could see. When he did it, his name was all over the sports press, not so much for the achievement, but because it earned him £100,000. The tournament was only worth a few thousand to the winner, but someone had put up the £100,000 prize for anyone who did a nine-dart finish and John got his biggest payday ever for that achievement. Well done that man!

Just for the record the tournament was the MFI darts tournament and he was playing Keith Deller , his last 3 darts? Triple 17, triple 18, double 18. see it below. That achievement gave him legendary status in the game and even though Phil Taylor has done it 3 or 4 times since and others have too, we all remember John’s effort simply because it was the first.

Oh by the way, John reckons Phil Taylor is probably the best darts player ever but he reckons there is no one to challenge him at the moment. Unlike in John’s era when he had constant battles with Eric Bristow. Lots of times it was John verses Eric at the final game and it was exciting to watch. But now we are in another era and Phil is dominant at the moment, although Raymond van Barneveld looks like giving him a challenge after his recent victory in the Las Vegas Desert Classic.
