Electronic dart boards
byThe advent of the electronic dart board has revolutionised darts and introduced the game to the younger generation. They look so damned cool as well. This has meant no-one "chalks" any more as the machine does it for you. However no one enjoyed that part much anyway.
There are so many types of electronic boards available now, from the simple wall mounted type to the full blown arcade type. I think this development can only help the game, although I think the steel tip dart will still dominate the world tournaments. The electronic dart board uses the soft tip darts i.e. the plastic tipped darts, and records your score every time you hit the board, so no cheating any more.
Many of the tournaments in America use this type of board, although the big International tournaments still use the steel tip Bristle boards. The real advantage of the electronics come into its own with the game of Cricket, widely played in the states and was a real chore to score for. Now the board does all that for you, great eh!.
One of the down sides of the electronic board is however no-one has to do the maths any more so players are not so good at the mental arithmetic which makes for big pauses when going out, working out which permutation should you go for? Eric Bristow of the old school can tell you instantly what possibilities you have to go out in 501 (if any) given a certain score, perhaps we should get a programmer to work with Eric to help us lesser mortals along and put them up on the scoreboard. Or is that taking things too far, we have to exercise our brain sometimes after all. But overall I welcome the new board, I tried out some of the latest arcade types at a trade show this year and they were excellent and drew big crowds to see them in action. The darts used were a bit lighter than normal, but it didn’t affect my game, I was still rubbish!
