Dartboards
The big news in the dart board world is obviously the new electronic boards; they are taking over for the domestic market at least. I am not surprised either, anything that takes away the chore of scoring, especially for cricket has to be good news, besides they don’t seem to teach mental arithmetic much these days.
I have tried a few electronic boards and they add a bit more spectacle to the game, they make the game easier and more exciting in my view, if only they could make the soft tips a bit more durable. Also a huge plus to the bars especially, is the coin op versions of the electronic dartboard, the big arcade types, that finally bring in some income to the bars, so that may just spread the game further.
The electronic boards come programmed for the usual 501 and 301 games and also for Cricket, probably the most popular darts game in the US. They also have lots of options for each game so you can program in your own local version of the game. They have various led displays for cricket and individual scoreboards for each player. Most electronic dartboards can cope with up to 8 players. And of course NO CHALKING.
In spite of the march of the electronic dartboard, the traditional Bristle Dart boards are still going strong. They are still used in all the big PDC tournaments (Or the Phil Taylor benevolent fund as they are now known) Also they have come on in leaps and bounds as well, with the advent of staple less dartboards. The new Bristle boards have razor thin wires separating the segments and staple free bulls. Made of sisal, there is no more satisfying thud than when a dart hits a sisal board, and they are still very popular as the expensive ones still look sooooo.. good.
The paper dartboards are still going too; from the cheap wall mart dart sets to the expensive Widdy paper board. Now the Widdy is no ordinary dart board, just looking at it tells you that, it doesn’t even look like a normal board. This board is the American original, used for years on the east coast, you will have to learn a new set of rules with this board and use the ½ inch thick wooden darts that come with it, a real oddball in the modern era, it is still popular.
